EIDT Clinics (Early Intervention Day Treatment)

What It Is:

Early Intervention Day Treatment (EIDT) is a center-based developmental and therapy program for young children with developmental delays or disabilities. Services are provided in a preschool-like environment, with therapy and developmental instruction integrated throughout the day.

EIDT is designed to support children’s development while also helping families manage therapy needs within a consistent daily routine.

Services offered at EIDT clinics may include:

  • Speech Therapy (ST)
  • Occupational Therapy (OT)
  • Physical Therapy (PT)
  • Developmental instruction and classroom-based learning
  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), when appropriate
  • Nursing services, when medically necessary

Not all EIDT providers offer the same services. Availability of ABA, nursing, transportation, and therapy models varies by program.

Children typically attend multiple days per week and receive services during their time at the center rather than traveling to multiple separate appointments.

Who Qualifies:

  •  Must be under age 6 (some exceptions for children with IEPs)
  • Must have a documented developmental delay or disability diagnosis
  • Qualify medically through TEFRA or traditional Medicaid

How to Enroll:

Enrollment in an EIDT clinic typically involves:

  • Talking with your child’s primary care provider about a referral
  • Choosing an EIDT provider in your area
  • Completing a developmental evaluation
  • Submitting an application and authorization packet through Medicaid

The enrollment process and wait times can vary by provider and location.

Pros of EIDT:

  •   Coordinated care in one location, reducing the need for families to attend multiple separate therapy appointments
  • Therapy sessions can be spread throughout the day or week, allowing children time to regulate and engage more fully in each session
  • Structured routines that support learning, regulation, and skill development
  • Opportunities for peer interaction and social development
  • Some clinics offer transportation to and from the center, easing logistical challenges for families
  • Some programs offer ABA services and/or nursing support, depending on the child’s needs
  • Provides working parents peace of mind knowing their child is cared for by professionals trained in developmental needs

Cons of EIDT:

  • Schedules are typically more structured and may be less flexible than outpatient therapy
  • Program quality, staffing, and services can vary significantly by provider
  • Not every clinic offers ABA, nursing services, or transportation
  • Group-based environments are not the best fit for every child
  • Transportation availability, hours, and service areas differ by location

Is an EIDT Clinic the Right Fit?

EIDT clinics may be a good fit for children who:

  • Benefit from predictable routines and structure
  • Need multiple services coordinated in one setting
  • Do well with peer interaction
  • Would benefit from therapy integrated throughout the day rather than isolated weekly sessions

They may be less appropriate for children who:

  • Require a very quiet or highly individualized environment
  • Struggle significantly in group settings
  • Need services primarily delivered in the home

There is no single “right” setting for every child. The best choice depends on the child’s needs, family logistics, and the services available in your area.

EIDT Providers

We’re currently building provider pages to help families compare EIDT clinics by location, services offered (such as ABA, nursing, or transportation), and program focus.
