In-Home Therapy

What It Is

In-home therapy provides therapy services within a child’s home or natural environment. Licensed therapists travel to the home and work directly with the child and family during scheduled sessions.

In-home therapy focuses on supporting skills where the child lives and functions every day, often emphasizing family routines, daily activities, and caregiver involvement.

In-home therapy may include:

  • Speech Therapy (ST)
  • Occupational Therapy (OT)
  • Physical Therapy (PT)
  • Developmental Therapy (DT)
  • Behavioral support or consultation, depending on the provider

Services offered, session length, and availability vary by provider.

Who Qualifies

 Children receiving in-home therapy typically:

  • Have a developmental delay, medical condition, or functional need impacting daily routines
  • Receive a referral from a primary care provider or specialist
  • Qualify for coverage through Medicaid, TEFRA, ARKids, First Connections, or private insurance, depending on the service

Eligibility is based on medical necessity and insurance authorization, not income alone.

How to Enroll

Enrollment in in-home therapy usually involves:

  • Obtaining a referral from a healthcare provider
  • Completing an evaluation
  • Securing insurance authorization
  • Coordinating visit times with a therapist who travels to your area

Availability may be limited by provider capacity and geographic service areas.

Pros of In-Home Therapy

  •  Therapy occurs in the child’s natural environment, allowing skills to be practiced during real daily routines
  • Minimal exposure to group settings, which may be preferable for children who are immunocompromised or medically fragile
  • No travel required for families
  • High level of caregiver involvement, supporting carryover between sessions
  • Can be especially helpful for children who struggle with transitions or unfamiliar environments

Cons of In-home Therapy

  • Scheduling depends on therapist travel routes and availability, which can limit flexibility
  • Fewer opportunities for peer interaction compared to center-based settings
  • Home environments may have distractions that affect session focus
  • Limited access to specialized equipment compared to clinic or center-based settings
  • Not all therapy disciplines or specialty services are available in-home
  • Services may be limited in rural or high-demand areas

While therapists bring materials and adapt activities creatively, some goals may require equipment that is only available in clinic or center-based settings.
